The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has allocated 130 million euros to the Verano Joven program this year - 10 million more than last year. Over the previous three years of Verano Joven's existence, more than 4 million young people have used it, making more than 16 million trips. In 2025, the number of trips increased by 30% compared to the previous year - more than 6.8 million trips in three months. These figures eloquently demonstrate: the program works and the demand for it is only growing.

Who can use the Verano Joven program in Spain?

All young people with Spanish or foreign citizenship, legally residing in Spain and born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2008 can use the discounts. That is, at the time of the start of the program you must be between 18 and 30 years old. Those who will turn 18 after the beginning of the summer are also eligible to participate.

Important! Having only legal residence status in Spain is already a sufficient condition - you do not need to have Spanish citizenship to register. That is why the program is also relevant for citizens of Colombia, the USA, China, Peru, Morocco and other foreigners living in the country.

What discounts are available under the Verano Joven 2026 program?

The amount of discounts depends on the type of transport. The biggest savings are waiting for those who choose a bus or regional train - the discount here is 90%. You should not count on full coverage for high-speed and long-distance routes, but 50% is also a lot.

The specific picture looks like this:

- 90% - for regular state bus services;

- 90% - for medium-distance trains (Media Distancia) and narrow-gauge routes;

- 50% – on Avant trains (short high-speed Renfe routes);

- 50%, but not more than 30 euros per ticket – on long-distance and high-speed trains of all operators: AVE, Alvia, Avlo, Ouigo, Iryo and others;

- 50% – on the Interrail Global Flexible pass (10 days in 2 months) when purchased through Renfe.

Spain is tightening the rules for the use of electric scooters, more details here.

According to last year, the average discount on one bus ticket was about 24.5 euros, on a high-speed train ticket – 18 euros, on a regional train – about 10 euros, and the average savings on an Interrail pass – about 168 euros. If you are planning several trips over the summer, the total savings can be really significant.

How to register for the Spanish Verano Joven program?

Registration is completely free. To use the program, you must register on the official Verano Joven website using your DNI or NIE, or through the Cl@ve system.

After data verification, each user receives a personal code that must be indicated when purchasing tickets from the relevant operators.

Important! It is forbidden to transfer the code to others.

Registration opened on June 17, 2026. It is worth remembering that you must register no later than 24 hours before the first purchase - this is the time required for data verification by the Ministry. If the code is lost, it can be restored through the same website.

Tickets with a discount are purchased directly on the websites of carriers - Renfe, Ouigo, Iryo and others. The field for entering the registration code appears when placing an order.

Rules for using Verano Joven 2026

The code is strictly personal: it is prohibited to transfer it to another person. If you cannot make the trip, you must cancel it at least 24 hours in advance - otherwise it will be considered abuse.

The Ministry of Transport may revoke the registration code of those who exceed the permitted number of violations - both in rail and bus transport. In this case, violators will not have the right to re-register. The carrier company will notify you of each detected abuse by SMS or email.

In 2026, Verano Joven became part of a wider package of government measures aimed at mitigating the consequences of rising prices due to the crisis in the Middle East, which affected, among other things, the cost of passenger transportation. For young people, who often have a limited budget, this is one of the few real opportunities to travel without significant expenses.

If you are between 18 and 30 years old and legally residing in Spain, it is worth registering now, while the season is just beginning.

The Verano Joven program is a great opportunity to discover Spain or go on a tour of Europe with Interrail. But even a budget trip needs reliable protection: illness on the road, loss of belongings or sudden cancellation of the trip can turn a vacation into a real stress.

Travel insurance from Visit World covers exactly these situations: medical expenses, loss of luggage, flight cancellation and other unforeseen circumstances. You can apply for a policy online in a few minutes - even at home, before departure. This is especially important for trips abroad, where medical care can cost much more than at home.

Travel smart and with peace of mind, apply for travel insurance from Visit World!

Reminder! Spain continues to tighten rules for tourist accommodation: Valencia introduces strict restrictions, and Barcelona is preparing for a complete ban on short-term rentals. The reason is the sharp increase in housing prices and dissatisfaction of local residents. We have already talked about the new rules and how they will affect tourists and homeowners.
