Incheon Became the World’s Busiest International Airport
According to results for the first half of 2026, Incheon International Airport in South Korea handled 38.39 million international passengers and took the top spot globally in this category for the first time. London’s Heathrow handled 37.79 million passengers during the same period, while Singapore’s Changi handled 34.53 million.
For Incheon, this marks a significant leap in the global rankings. In 2002, the airport ranked only 10th in terms of international passenger traffic; by 2018, it had risen to fifth place; and by 2024–2025, it was already among the world’s top three international aviation hubs.
Today, Incheon is one of East Asia’s key transportation hubs. The airport serves 101 airlines and offers connections to 183 cities, 158 of which are international destinations. Following the completion of a large-scale expansion, its projected capacity has increased to 106 million passengers per year.

Why has passenger traffic through Incheon grown so sharply?
Transit traffic has been the main driver of Incheon’s growth. In the first half of 2026, 4.24 million transit passengers passed through the airport, an increase of 18.1% compared to the previous year.
Several factors contributed to this growth:
- The number of passengers flying through Incheon onward to Europe increased by 63.2%;
- Some routes shifted toward East Asia due to disruptions and instability in air service in the Middle East;
- An extensive network of international flights has made Incheon a convenient transit hub between Asia, Europe, and North America;
- The airport continues to expand its capacity and the number of connecting routes.
As a result, Incheon has strengthened its position not only as South Korea’s main aviation hub but also as one of the world’s key transit centers.

Which airports are among the world’s top 5 largest international aviation hubs?
As of 2025, Incheon ranked only third in the world in terms of international passenger traffic. Dubai International remained the leader, handling over 95 million international passengers that year. London Heathrow held the second position.
The top 5 busiest airports in the world by international passenger traffic as of 2026:
1. Dubai International Airport, UAE — 95.19 million passengers
2. London Heathrow, United Kingdom — 79.87 million
3. Incheon International Airport, South Korea — 73.55 million
4. Singapore Changi Airport, Singapore — 69.40 million
5. Amsterdam Schiphol, Netherlands — 68.77 million
By the first half of 2026, the situation had changed: Incheon served 38.39 million international passengers and rose to first place, ahead of Heathrow with 37.79 million and Changi with 34.53 million. For an airport that ranked only tenth in 2002, this is the best result in its history.
