Australia has updated the processing order for visa applications from skilled professionals. Starting September 19, 2026, the immigration agency will prioritize applications from workers in specific industries. A separate fast-track category has been created for high-earning professionals. Travelobiz reports on this.

We’ll explain below which professions have been given priority, which visas are affected by these changes, and what you should keep in mind when submitting your documents.

Which professions are prioritized for work visas in Australia in 2026?

Australia gives priority to applications from professionals in defense, law enforcement, healthcare, education, construction, mining, agriculture, aquaculture, and fishing. This policy has been in effect since September 19, 2026, specifically for subclass 482, 186, and 494 visas. For the 482 visa, a separate applicant group has also been designated under the “Specialist Skills” stream, requiring an annual income of at least 146,576 Australian dollars.

Priority sectors include:

  • defense;
  • law enforcement;
  • healthcare;
  • teaching, including department chair positions;
  • construction;
  • mining;
  • agriculture, aquaculture, and fisheries.

The construction sector has received an expanded list of occupations. It now includes engineering department managers, architectural drafters, and construction technicians.

Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa: Application Processing Order

The order of processing applications for the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa is determined by Ministerial Directive No. 121. The document categorizes all applications into five groups, from highest to lowest priority:

  1. Specialists in priority sectors. The applicant’s location at the time of application does not matter for this group: applications submitted from within Australia and from overseas are given equal priority.
  2. Applicants under the Specialist Skills stream whose income meets the threshold of 146,576 Australian dollars per year.
  3. Other applicants who submitted their applications while in Australia.
  4. Overseas applicants who did not include family members in their application.
  5. All other Subclass 482 visa applications.

It is based on this system that the Australian Department of Home Affairs determines which applications to process first.

We previously reported that Australia has temporarily suspended the acceptance of Working Holiday Maker visa applications for 24 countries.

Subclasses 186 and 494: Application Processing Order Effective September 19

The processing order for permanent and regional visas for skilled workers is established by Ministerial Directive No. 122. It covers several migration pathways, including the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa and the Subclass 494 Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional visa.

Four groups are designated for these visas. Applications from professionals in priority sectors—the list of which matches that for the Subclass 482 visa—are processed first. Next come other applications submitted from within Australia, followed by applications from overseas without family members. The remaining applications covered by the directive fall into the last group.

Interesting! Australia is tightening rules for international students.

What factors influence a work visa application’s position in the queue?

The updated processing order is important for anyone planning to work in Australia, particularly for citizens of the U.S., Canada, and Costa Rica. Workers in priority sectors are at the top of the queue. For the 482 visa, the next group consists of high-earning professionals in the Specialist Skills category.

Among other applicants, those who submitted their documents while in Australia are given priority. Family composition also matters: applications submitted from abroad without family members are processed before similar applications filed with family members.

Will the new priorities speed up the process of obtaining an Australian visa?

The new priority order applies to applications submitted on or after September 19, 2026, as well as to previously submitted applications for which a decision has not yet been made. The guidelines only change the order in which applications are processed. The requirements for applicants and the lists of occupations requiring qualifications remain unchanged, and the new rules do not guarantee a faster decision for any individual applicant.

The Department of Home Affairs has warned of possible initial delays or disruptions. These are attributed to the redistribution of applications already under review. The changes continue a general trend in Australian immigration policy: processing order is increasingly being used to attract workers in sectors with high labor demand.
