One of Europe's key aviation hubs has taken a step that could change the concept of travel comfort. According to the Daily Mail, a new system has been launched in Germany that allows passengers to receive important airport announcements directly on their own devices.

Which European airport was the first to introduce the new system for passengers?

Frankfurt Airport became the first airport in the world to officially use Auracast technology to broadcast voice announcements. This involves the personal transmission of sound directly to passengers' devices.

Initially, the system was launched in Terminal 1 at two boarding gates. Here, travelers can experience the new format of announcements in real airport conditions, amid noise, large crowds, and parallel announcements.

New Auracast technology at the airport: how does it work for passengers?

The solution is based on new-generation Bluetooth technology, which allows audio to be transmitted directly to hearing aids, headphones, in-ear devices, or smartphones. Passengers connect to the stream themselves and receive flight announcements in a clear, understandable form, without having to catch words amid background noise.

In fact, the general sound from the loudspeakers is converted into a personal audio channel. The information is perceived as if the person is listening to a phone call or their own playlist, which significantly reduces stress and the risk of missing an important message.

How do Bluetooth announcements at the airport help people with hearing impairments?

It is estimated that more than 1.5 billion people worldwide live with some form of hearing impairment. For them, airports remain a challenging environment, as announcements are lost in the noise, information is often only duplicated by voice, and any mistake can cost them a missed flight.

The new system directly addresses this problem. It allows people with hearing impairments to navigate the airport independently and comfortably, without constantly asking staff for help. Auracast is supported by modern smartphones, including select Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models, as well as compatible hearing aids and headphones.

Is Auracast technology expected to spread to other airports?

Over the next few months, the project partners plan to actively collect feedback from both passengers and airport staff. The goal is to assess how the new system affects accessibility, overall comfort, and the experience of being in the terminals.

It is separately noted that Auracast paves the way for the concept of a so-called “silent airport.” In the future, traditional loud announcements may be minimized, and most communication will take place through personal messages sent to passengers' individual devices.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the technology company Sittig Technologies, airport operator Fraport, and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. Airport representatives emphasize that their strategic goal is to create a calm, inclusive, and understandable environment for all categories of passengers.

Sittig Technologies, in turn, emphasizes that the key advantage of Auracast is that it can be implemented without completely replacing the existing infrastructure. This makes the technology scalable and attractive to other airports around the world.
