Swiss citizens do not need a work permit but must remain residents of Switzerland. Each year, the government issues only 17 residence permits for Swiss citizens, of which 12 are for those engaged in paid employment and 5 for those who are not working.
EU/EEA citizens are entitled to work without a full work permit but are required to register with the Migration and Passport Office within 10 days of starting work and must remain residents of their home countries. For cross-border commuting, a special permit is required, which is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. The total number of residence permits for EEA citizens is 72 per year, of which 56 are for employed individuals. Half of these permits are issued through a lottery, and the other half are issued directly by the government.
