The World's Most Popular Automakers in 2026: Who Topped the Rankings
The Toyota Group retained its status as the world's largest automaker based on results for the first half of 2026. Learn more about the companies that made it into the top 10 of the global auto market, and how the rankings of Volkswagen, Hyundai-Kia, BYD, and other major automakers are changing
The balance of power in the global automotive market continues to shift, but a familiar name remains in first place. According to results for the first half of 2026, the Toyota Group topped the global ranking of automakers with a market share of 12.4%. The Volkswagen Group took second place with 9.4%, while Hyundai-Kia secured third place with 8.5%.
At the same time, the results of individual companies vary significantly by region. Traditional auto giants are losing sales in some Asian markets, while Chinese manufacturers are rapidly expanding their presence in Europe and the Americas. The situation with BYD was particularly telling: the company did not make it into the top ten of the global ranking but demonstrated significant growth in Western markets.
When planning a trip by car, you should take care not only of the route and accommodation, but also of financial protection on the way. Green Card is an international car insurance that is valid in many countries and helps to avoid significant costs in the event of road incidents. Toyota Remains the World’s Most Popular Automaker
Based on the results of the first half of 2026, the Toyota Group took first place in the global automotive market with a 12.4% share. Despite a 3.9% decline in its market share, the Japanese conglomerate maintained a noticeable lead over its closest competitors.
One of Toyota’s key strengths remains its strong presence across many major markets. The company sells a wide range of models, from compact city cars to crossovers, pickup trucks, and premium Lexus models. The hybrid segment plays a special role, as Toyota has held one of the strongest positions among global automakers in this segment for many years.
Its closest competitor, the Volkswagen Group, controls 9.4% of the global market, trailing Toyota by approximately 3 percentage points. Hyundai-Kia ranks third with a 8.5% share. Thus, even amid an overall decline in sales, Toyota remains the undisputed leader in the global rankings.

Which automakers made it into the global top ten?
The top ten largest automakers are dominated by Japanese, European, and American companies. However, most of the leaders ended the first half of the year with a decline in sales, while only a few companies showed positive growth.
The ranking is as follows:
1. Toyota Group—sales down 3.9%
2. Volkswagen Group—down 7.6%
3. Hyundai-Kia—down 0.2%
4. Stellantis—up 3.3%
5. Renault-Nissan Alliance—down 3.9%
6. General Motors—down 10%
7. Ford Group — down 10.2%
8. Suzuki — up 9.4%
9. Geely Group — down 8.5%
10. Honda Motor — down 6.4%
Suzuki showed the strongest performance among the top 10, increasing sales by 9.4%. In contrast, the Ford Group and General Motors recorded the largest declines—more than 10%. It is also noteworthy that China’s Geely is already among the world’s top ten automotive groups, while BYD, despite its active international expansion, remains outside the top ten for now.

Volkswagen and Hyundai-Kia Remain Toyota’s Main Competitors
The Volkswagen Group and Hyundai-Kia occupy second and third place in the global rankings, but their sales trends vary significantly by region. Volkswagen is currently facing its greatest challenges in Asia, while in the U.S. market, the group is, on the contrary, showing growth.
The Volkswagen Group controls 9.4% of the global auto market, but its total sales fell by 7.6%. The sharpest decline was recorded in Asia—a 23.4% drop. In the Americas, the trend was the opposite: the group’s sales rose by 3.6%.
At Hyundai-Kia, which ranks third with an 8.5% market share, the situation is more stable. Total sales fell by only 0.2%. In the Americas, they rose by 4.1%, while in Europe they fell by 0.8% and in Asia by 3.7%.

BYD and Chinese brands are strengthening their positions outside Asia
BYD deserves special attention, having ranked 11th in the global rankings for the first half of 2026. The company’s overall performance was weaker due to a 34.2% drop in sales in Asia; however, the trend was quite different in Western markets.
In Europe, BYD’s sales rose by 66.6%, and in the Americas, they surged by 121.2%. This growth indicates that the Chinese manufacturer is gradually transforming from a predominantly Asian player into a global competitor to traditional automakers.
A similar trend is evident in a broader context: Chinese brands are increasingly entering the European and American markets, particularly in the electric vehicle segment and among more affordable, technologically advanced models. In the coming years, it is precisely this competition that could most significantly alter the balance of power in the global rankings of automakers.
